DODGE CITY – Gerald “Jerry Mac” McElgunn, 76, died Sunday, June 24, 2012 at Presbyterian Manor of the Plains, Dodge City.

He was born October 11, 1935 at Larned, the son of Francis and Esther M. Schawe McElgunn. He was a 1957 graduate of St. Mary’s High School and a lifetime Dodge City resident. From 1952 to 1982 he served as the “Trainer” for St. Mary of the Plains High School and College football and basketball teams and was inducted into the St. Mary of the Plains College Athletic Hall of Fame. In 1980, he was named Most Inspirational Player by the Southwest Softball Association and in 1988 he was recognized as the St. Mary of the Plains Outstanding Alumnus. This award was presented to him by former SMPC coach and athletic director, Frank Diskin.

He was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Dodge City.

Survivors include: his brother, Francis and wife Peggy, Prairie Village, Kansas; his sister, Kathleen McElgunn, Dodge City; a sister-in-law, Marty McElgunn, Dodge City; and several nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Richard, a sister, Delores McElgunn, an uncle, Paul McElgunn, a nephew, Lawrence McElgunn and a great niece, Megan McElgunn.

Vigil Service will be 7:00 pm Tuesday, June 26, 2012 at Burkhart-Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge City. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 am Wednesday at Sacred Heart Cathedral, 901 Central Ave., Dodge City, with Fr. Ted A. Skalsky presiding. Friends may call from noon to 7:00 pm Tuesday at Burkhart-Ziegler Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Dodge City.

The family suggests memorials to Hospice of the Prairie or Manor of the Plains both in care of Burkhart-Ziegler Funeral Chapel, 1901 N. 14th Ave., Dodge City, Kansas 67801.
